Hey, a comic!
When I was a kid, I was obsessed with comics. The first book I remember reading is the Tintin adventure Red Rackham’s Treasure, while Asterix, Gaston, and Lucky Luke were my heroes. All of those still hold up magnificently, and are among my very favourite stories. (The stack of Garfield comics in my room, however, hasn’t aged so well, though. wow. Although! they have found their redemption in the almost sickeningly sad Garfield minus Garfield. Absolutely check it out.)
Anyway, I forgot about all those sometime in middle school when I found out about the Beatles (another story) and decided I wanted to be a rock star. But in the last few years, I’ve come back to comics. My university had an amazing graphic novel room, and I’d unwind there by reading through archives of the American comics I’d never really gotten to know. (At some point I’ll write about early Green Lantern. Fantastic stuff :P) From there I stumbled on Maus, Scott McCloud’s […]-ing Comics trilogy, Lynda Barry’s What It Is, Dykes to Watch Out For, and fell in love with this wonderful form all over again. Mmmm. I’m so glad to be drawing again!
At this point, all I’ve got is my notebook and a pencil. Perhaps at some point I’ll get my hands on some fancier equipment and the comics will look nicer. For now, I’m just glad to share them with you as they are 🙂 Enjoy!
